NAME: Mertz
LOCATION: Crescenta Highlands,
California
PROGRAM: Church
SQ.FT: 6,100 sq.ft

Located in the foothills of the San Gabriel mountains, this church is wholly defined by this remote and natural location.

The multi-peaked shape of the building is cued from the mountains that lie behind – literally applying the process of folding and uplift like a diagram of geologic forces. And time.

The front façade is screen that allows natural filtered light to penetrate deep into the building and the sloped floor permits terraced seating. The floor plan is wedge shaped so the furniture is arranged around the plan radially – and the circulation operates like the spokes of a wheel. The folds of the roof also follow this radial logic and originate from one single point at the foot of the building.
